Gel cell battery chargers, the new SLA battery enhancements
Gel cell battery chargers are designed specifically for this special type of sealed lead-acid battery. For applications where breaking or spilling might become an issue, gel cell batteries are a possible alternative. For these batteries, do not try to use a standard lead-acid battery charger, you really need to use gel cell battery chargers.
Because a gell cell battery has no “liquid”, a cracked cell will not leak, continuing to work normally. On the other hand, improperly charging it – specially overcharging it – will create some void spaces inside that will quickly degrade its efficiency. That’s why specific gel cell battery chargers are required, unless you want to spend more money getting a new battery soon.
The gel cell batteries are a nice evolution to lead acid batteries, (as are also Absorbed Glass Mat, or AGM batteries). For the added ruggedness and increased battery life, you just need to make sure you use proper gel cell battery chargers. Once you switch to these new batteries, you’ll quickly forget about the “old” lead acid battery design.
